In a few months an organization was set up inside, for a race as long as half of Italy, which nowadays would seem unlikely. The problem of clearly indicating the route along roads badly maintained, badly sign-posted and, obviously, not closed to traffic during the race, was resolved by Castagneto, who thought up the widely known Red Arrow with white lettering. The first edition of Mille Miglia saw, almost to reward the organizing city, three O.M.s in the first three places. These cars were made in the Brescia Officine Meccaniche - great rejoicing!

In 1927 began the domination of Alfa Romeo. This began at this time, (in spite of the participation of the big team sent from France by the Milanese Ettore Bugatti, whose participation made the second year's race international), because he beat, along with Campari, the O.M. of Rosa and Mazzotti. This one showed himself to be a splendid driver besides being a high level organizer (some time after he set up a speed record with his hydroplane). |

The Mille Miglia in 1929 was the debut of a vehicle destined to dominate, the Alfa Romeo 1750, with which "Negher" Campari gave himself an encore, again in front of the O.M. Superba of Rosa-Morandi. These were the years when motoring was understood as an authentic arduous sport, pioneering and heroic, which contributed so much towards technological progress (it's enough to think of how many solutions the technicians unravelled and then adopted to make vehicles of that time face 1600 Km of wandering roads)
They were years in which, because of the dust thrown up by preceding vehicles, in order to keep in the right direction the drivers looked upwards to the line of telegraph poles on the roadside.
